How long does Search Engine Optimization take to get my website listed on the first page?

When projecting the length of time for achieving search engine rankings, it’s important to consider various aspects, including domain age, competition level, current standings/efforts, site architecture, and a variety of other factors. While we can make some pretty good educated guesses, with so many different aspects contributing to search engine rankings, there is no definitive answer.

While clients typically begin to see some movement within the first few months (rankings increases from page 7 to page 5, for example), substantial results (first page) can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months, depending on the level of competition. Small businesses focusing on less competitive keywords (ie. "Hamilton family dentist" vs "dentist") will typically see quicker results.

Beware of SEO companies promising rapid results. While it’s possible to see results quicker when using blackhat techniques, these practices will eventually backfire and cause your website to rank even lower than when your started - or to be dropped completely.

What is black hat SEO and white hat SEO?

"White hat" describes SEO that uses safe, best practices recommended by the search engines. "Black hat" techniques are specifically frowned upon by the search engines. If Google finds out you're using black hat SEO, they'll punish you. They can drop your site to the bottom of the results or remove your site from their directory altogether. Rocket SEO uses only white hat techniques.

How do you find the best keywords for my business?

We have tools whereby we determine the search volume for every search term, and also determine how many others are competing to get ranked for that search term. We will work with you to create a list of terms that are most relevant for your business, and then research and determine which search terms and most easily 'winnable' to achieve the highest amount of relevant traffic to your website.

Do some SEO companies have a special relationship with the search engines, as they claim?

No SEO company has a 'special relationship' with the search engines. You cannot buy your way to the top of the organic rankings. Companies that claim they can get you first position for a certain amount of money are likely just going to purchase paid advertising for you, quite possibly at a significant mark-up.

I am already doing pay-per-click advertising on Google. Should I also pay for Search Engine Optimization?

While a well managed pay-per-click campaign can produce instant results, the cost-per-client is usually significantly more in comparison to clients achieved through SEO. Additionally, money invested in SEO is a lasting investment, while as soon as you turn off your PPC campaign it is done as it has no effect on your search engine ranking.

A 2012 report shows that search engine users overwhelmingly click on organic search results over paid listings by a ratio of 94% to 6%. While we can also help you make your pay-per-click campaigns more profitable, our optimization efforts to improve your rankings in the free listings is typically the better investment in the long run.

While SEO may take months to produce results, once you achieve good ranking the value is much greater. A combination of SEO and PPC, while you wait for your SEO to work, is often a good strategy.
